Discount Armageddon (InCryptid Series #1)

Discount Armageddon - Seanan McGuire Do not attempt to take this book seriously at any time. It just won't work.I thought this was a pretty funny book. It reminded me a lot of Gini Koch's Kitty Katt series, with the irreverent humor and ass-kicking. But with monsters, not hot aliens. The story was awesome, the characters were well-developed, and the action was intense. My only complaint is that Verity (the narrator) got a little long-winded when describing the history of the Covenant and various cryptid species. At the same time, this is the beginning of a series and the world-building is quite necessary. I admit to skimming a few paragraphs to get to the dialogue/action/sex/monsters.I felt a little weird about Dominic and his miraculous transition from wanting to murder all cryptids to offering to help them. At the same time, can you really hold fast to teachings that you are now witnessing to be false? I have a feeling I'd be doing a pretty quick 180 after all that evidence was thrown in my face. So, no real complaints here, which is noteworthy for me. I felt like the book was witty and I liked the characters (can I get some Aeslin mice up in here, please?), but this was no literary masterpiece. Verity's humor knocks this book into my favorites list and I'll read the next book in the series when I remember to look for it over a year from now.I recommend this book for anyone that likes their monsters to be a little human. The quotes in my status updates are from the beginning of each chapter. I didn't include all of them, but I did forget to keep adding them. So, here are my other favorites:“There’s nothing wrong with making a last stand. Just make sure you bring enough grenades to share with the entire class.” – Alice Healy“We all make mistakes. Luckily for us, there are very few mistakes that can’t be solved with a suitable application of either lipstick or hand grenades.” – Frances Brown“This isn’t the sort of business that comes with a lifetime guarantee. You start because it’s the right thing to do, and by the time you realize that the only way to quit is a closed casket funeral, it’s too late to get out. That’s just the way it is.” – Alice Healy“Learning something new about the world in which we live is always a wonderful thing. Unless you’re learning what a wendigo looks like from the inside.” – Evelyn Baker“When all else fails, put on a fresh coat of lip gloss and pretend you have no idea what that horrible thing that just went running down Main Street was. A surprisingly large number of people will believe you.” – Frances Brown“Never tell anyone to be careful, never ask what that noise was, and for the love of God, never, ever say that you’ll be right back.” – Evelyn Baker“The greatest joy is the joy of discovery. Followed closely by the joy of a discovery that doesn’t kill you.” – Enid Healy
